Outskirts of Nowhere
This phrase popped into my head the other day as I was driving and didn't realize where I was going or where, really, I was. It's stayed with me these past several days, as phrases sometimes do, and it lead me to thinking about the Talking Heads song, "We're on the Road to Nowhere."
Outskirts of nowhere. I like the phrase - it has a nice ring to it. Sort of like being lost in some lonely land, in the middle of who knows where. And after reading a few of the lyrics from the "Road to Nowhere" song, it became clearer to me:
"We're on a road to nowhere, Come on inside. Takin' that ride to nowhere, We'll take that ride."
Is it really so bad to be on the outskirts of nowhere or on the road to nowhere? Do we really have to know where we are and where we're going all the time? My answer is no, we don't, and in fact it's probably better for us if we don't. This gives us a chance to see other possibilities, to throw the roadmap out the window, and just drive. Maybe the outskirts of nowhere is exactly where we belong right now. Feel the freedom!
Outskirts of Nowhere Exercise
For the next week practice living with out a roadmap. Take each day minute by minute and see what comes up. Where is the energy leading you, what activities do you find yourself doing? Do you feel liberated not knowing what's coming next? Or do you find yourself feeling nervous about what might happen if you aren't completely in control and following the map? Notice what feelings and experiences living this way produces. How can you incorporate this more into your everyday life from now on?
Quotes
"Here's how to view every decision you've ever made: It was right. Here's how to view every path you've ever chosen: It was right. Here's how to view every trend, friend, and dance you've ever moved with: They were right. And here's how to view the fact that you even exist at all: "I" was totally on fire."
~Abraham/Hicks
