[...] Bill Baren recently wrote There is NO Competition. I’m going to quote something cause it’s important: We have no competitors. It’s not about measuring our self or our business against anyone else. It is about continuing to refine what’s unique about what we do. It’s about zeroing in on your essential zone of genius.
Hey Bill -- I think the distinction you made in your comment is key -- being aware vs. competing. I think it's similar to what I was saying - don't obsess, but pay attention...just using different words.

And I think the distinction between internal exploration and comparing ourselves to others is also key - which you've made in your comment...

There is a difference between competing and simply being aware. It is vital that we know what's going on in our marketplace and with other companies that reach a similar demographic.

We identify and zero-in on our essential zone of genius from going deeper into ourselves and witnessing what lights us up and what continues to draw us in. It is often important to seperate that exploration from comparing ourselves to others.

No one can be a better Ben then you. No one can create a better "I Got News For You" then you, if it's truly unique.

Thank you, Ben, for keeping this important dialogue going.

Bill - I don't know if trackbacks are enabled here, but I linked directly to your post in my latest one: http://www.igotnewsforyou.com/blog/2006/08/1-pro-and-1-con-of-watching.html

I love your sentence, "zeroing in on your essential zone of genius."

But let me ask you this, and maybe we can get an interesting dialogue going -- "If I have to refine what's unique about me, how can I do that without comparison? By definition, being 'unique' means being unique versus something else, no?"

I believe this 100%. I don't think you should measure yourself or your company against others, but rather measure yourself against what you could be. Reminds me of what my father taught me a long time ago: "Don't worry about what the other guy makes. Worry about what YOU make."
